There are a few common skin disorders that are now being treated effectively with prescription medication. Patients with rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis can now rest easy knowing that there are medical alternatives to treating their skin conditions, in a safe and controlled way. We are proud to be able to offer these new, groundbreaking alternatives to suffering in silence with an uncomfortable or unsightly skin condition, at our Davie dermatology center.

Rhofade
Recently approved by the FDA, Rhofade is the golden ticket for patients with rosacea. This once daily topical treatment, from Allergan, is proven to be the most effective way of reducing persistent erythema associated with rosacea in adults. The National Rosacea Society (NRS) estimates that approximately 16 million Americans are affected by rosacea. Persistent facial redness is cited as the most common sign of rosacea, and may resemble a flushing or sunburn that does not go away. In two clinical trials, a once-daily application of Rhofade was proven to reduce persistent facial erythema associated with rosacea through 12 hours.

Eucrisa
Also recently approved by the FDA, is a prescription treatment for eczema, Eucrisa, made by Pfizer. Eucrisa, also a topical ointment, is a new steroid-free treatment for mild to moderate eczema. A thin layer of eucrisa, applied twice daily, has been proven to reduce the symptoms of eczema within 28 days of treatment. Eczema typically presents itself is swollen, red, scaly or leathery patches of skin.

Taltz
Rounding out the trifecta of new, effective skincare medication, is Taltz, for the treatment of psoriasis. Psoriasis is a condition in which skin cells build up and form scales, and itchy, dry patches. Also a prescription medication, Taltz is used to treat adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. An initial dose of Tatlz is administered through two injections, and then taken once every two weeks for three months and then just once every four weeks after that. As for results, 90% of Taltz users saw an improvement in their skin condition, with 4 out of 10 patients reporting completely clear skin.

And on the horizon, stay tuned for this prescription medicine all-star for moderate to severe adult eczema:

Dupixent
FDA’s approval of Dupixent demonstrates our commitment to approving new and innovative therapies for patients with skin disease,” Julie Beitz, MD, director of the Office of Drug Evaluation III in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, stated in an FDA press release. “Eczema can cause significant skin irritation and discomfort for patients, so it is important to have a variety of treatment options available to patients, including those patients whose disease in not controlled by topical therapies.”

Because these are prescription medications that each have a different list of potential side effects, a consultation with a medical skin professional will be necessary. At Precision Skin Institute, we are happy to provide you with a consultation that will determine which medication is right for your skin condition, and how to best administer the treatment conveniently and in the comfort of your own home.
